Can I Need to Wear Braces a Second Time?

While traditional braces are normally associated with teenagers, it’s completely possible for them to address misalignments in adults as well. In fact, many people may find that their teeth have shifted from where they were when they completed their initial orthodontic treatments in their teen years, and a second round of braces can usually correct these issues. Here’s how wearing braces a second time may be able to benefit you.

Why Have My Teeth Shifted Out of Place?

Even after orthodontic treatment, the human mouth continues to grow and develop throughout its lifetime. Some people’s teeth shift because of the way their gums change shape as they age, and others may find that their teeth are moved out of place over years of vigorous use or teeth grinding. However, an unfortunately common reason for an orthodontic patient’s teeth to move out of place is that they didn’t wear their retainer as instructed.

How Can I Wear Braces a Second Time?

Before you can wear braces a second time, you must have a consultation with your dentist. This meeting will include a thorough examination of your mouth as well as a dialogue so your dentist can explain the process to you and you can ask any questions you may have. This consultation may also involve X-rays so your provider can evaluate the health of your mouth’s inner structures. Any tooth decay or gum disease will need to be resolved before the treatment can proceed.

How Can I Keep My Smile Straight Afterward?

If you’ve worn braces before, you probably won’t need much convincing to persuade you to wear your retainer as instructed after a second orthodontic treatment. While you’ll probably receive a removable retainer to wear at night, your dentist may also cement a fixed retainer to the back of your teeth. You’ll need to take care of your removable retainer by cleaning them daily while also practicing excellent oral hygiene to preserve the results of your second orthodontic treatment.

There’s no reason for a person with a healthy mouth to not be able to wear braces a second or third time if necessary. Consulting with your dentist can determine if orthodontic treatment is right for you.
